A unit of value or representation of an asset, right, or piece of data, issued and managed on top of an existing blockchain.
Example: ERC-20 tokens like USDC and UNI, and ERC-721 tokens like Bored Ape NFTs, are both ‘tokens’ built on top of Ethereum rather than native to its base protocol.
