An architecture in which a single blockchain layer handles execution, settlement, consensus, and data availability together, as opposed to a modular design.
Example: Bitcoin and Solana are both monolithic — each handles execution, consensus, and data availability within a single integrated layer, unlike modular designs such as Celestia plus a rollup.
