A consensus mechanism in which validators are selected to propose and confirm blocks based on the quantity of native tokens they have locked, or staked, as collateral.
Applied: Ethereum’s September 2022 ‘Merge’ moved the network from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake, cutting its energy consumption by an estimated 99.95%.
