A network-adjusted measure of how computationally hard it is to produce a valid block under a proof-of-work consensus mechanism.
Example: Bitcoin’s difficulty adjusts every 2,016 blocks (roughly two weeks) to keep average block time near 10 minutes regardless of how much mining power joins or leaves the network.
