A compact set of cryptographic hashes that allows a party to verify that a specific piece of data is included in a Merkle tree without needing the entire data set.

Applied: light clients on mobile Bitcoin wallets use Merkle proofs (via Simplified Payment Verification) to confirm a transaction occurred without downloading the full blockchain.
