A mathematical function that converts an input of any size into a fixed-length output in a way that is deterministic, irreversible, and highly sensitive to even minor changes in the original input.
Example: SHA-256, used by Bitcoin, always produces a 256-bit (64-character) output regardless of whether the input is one character or one gigabyte.
